Who I Am

18 Years of Growing Knowledge

I'm Margaret Thornbury, Senior Gardening Editor at diylab.org Collective Ltd. My journey started in my grandmother's cottage garden in the Cotswolds, where I spent childhood summers learning how things actually grow. That foundation led me to Writtle University College, where I studied Horticulture formally, and then 12 years working with the Royal Horticultural Society's education team. These days, I manage my own allotment plot in Hampshire and help new gardeners figure out what works in their space—not what looks pretty in a magazine.

My approach is straightforward. Gardening shouldn't feel intimidating or require a degree to understand. Whether you're setting up your first raised bed or planning a seasonal rotation on an allotment plot, there's a practical, achievable way to do it. I've advised over 200 new allotment holders through Hampshire gardening clubs, and I bring that same hands-on experience to everything I write. Real soil, real plants, real results—that's what matters.

Background

Education & Experience

01

Formal Horticultural Training

Completed Horticulture degree at Writtle University College in Essex. Holds RHS Level 3 Advanced Certificate in Horticulture. This foundation shaped how I understand plant physiology, soil science, and sustainable growing methods.

02

Royal Horticultural Society

Spent 12 years developing planting guides and managing demonstration gardens for the RHS education team. During this time, I created seasonal guides, conducted regional workshops, and helped establish best practices for UK gardeners across varying climates.

03

Allotment Management & Consulting

Managing my own allotment plot in Hampshire for over 20 years. I've advised 200+ new allotment holders through local gardening clubs, conducting workshops on plot planning, crop rotation, raised bed construction, and seasonal management.

Specialisation

What I Focus On

Four areas where I bring real experience and practical guidance

Raised Bed Design

From choosing the right materials and sizing to soil composition and placement—I've built enough raised beds to know what works. You'll find practical guides on everything from small urban gardens to full-sized allotment beds.

Allotment Management

Plot planning, crop rotation strategies, seasonal scheduling, and pest management without chemicals. I share what I've learned managing my own plot and helping dozens of others establish theirs successfully.

RHS Planting Guides

Seasonal schedules, planting timelines, and variety recommendations based on RHS standards. I translate RHS guidance into accessible, month-by-month instructions for UK gardeners at every experience level.

Cottage Garden Style

Creating authentic English cottage garden aesthetics with proper plant selection, layout, and maintenance. It's about abundance and authenticity, not expensive design trends.

Approach

Practical Over Perfect

I've never believed in gardening as an exclusive hobby for experts. It's something anyone can learn and enjoy, regardless of space or experience. That's why my writing focuses on what actually works in real British gardens, not theoretical ideals.

You won't find complicated jargon here. Just clear, step-by-step guidance based on what I've grown, what's failed, and what I've learned from hundreds of conversations with other gardeners. Some things work beautifully. Others don't. Both teach you something valuable.

"Gardening should be inclusive and achievable, not intimidating. That's the principle behind everything I write."
